Pop Star - Spectrum

Pop Star - Spectrum celebrates the interconnection of sky and earth, old and new, humans and our physical world, bridging opposites with bold colors and soft lines that flow between its surroundings of city-landscape and architecture.

Pop Star – Spectrum transforms the Hongqiao City Park into a temporary art envirement for the community, and celebrates the interconnection of sky and earth, old and new, humans and our physical world, bridging opposites with bold colors and soft curves that flow between its surroundings of city-landscape and architecture.

The artist plays with visual perception, namely the Gestalt principles of proximity, similarity, and closure. In the sculpture, single forms merge into one organic shape that is so large and complex, one can never take it in fully from one vantage point. Viewers must visually piece together the parts from different perspectives to complete the artwork in their minds.

Visually, the sculpture evokes the contours and colors of cloud formations over the Bay.For coloring, Li Hao engages the human mind’s tendency to unconsciously join separate like-colored forms together. The work casts cinematic colorful shadow drawings onto the ground, further highlighting the “spectrum choreography.”

In daylight, viewers see the embedded physical color of the semitransparent material, which also changes gradually through time. At night, the perceived color slowly changes through the addition of programmed projections of colored LED lighting.

The pop star series is a global traveling project. Each installation has unique colored and lighting designed to speak with its specific architectural and historic context. Projects are designed according to the climate and intended lifespan for each site and context.

This project was achieved through Li Hao’s collaboration with a team of international award-winning engineers, lighting consultants, and fabricators.
